Why the latest Istanbul attacks were so pernicious - Opinion - Editorial - General - The Canberra Times

Creating terror in a country such as Turkey with more than 70 million people, and particularly in a city the size of Istanbul, will plunge the country not just into dismay but rather into chaos. The attacks in Gungoren, a suburb of Istanbul, last Sunday killed 17 and wounded 150 innocent civilians. These attacks were designed to create chaos and intimidate the Government. So far, no terrorist organisation has claimed responsibility. If any group does, the whole web of terrorist organisations will have to shoulder the responsibility because in Turkey they are all interwoven, as the recent arrests indicate."

Turkey moves on
TURKEY'S JUDICIAL establishment, to the relief of its government and the country's European friends, has pulled back from the brink. The Constitutional Court's decision on Wednesday not to close the country's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) should bring a welcome end to months of political uncertainty, and marks an important landmark in the ongoing struggle to reconcile secularism with democracy. The ruling will also weaken the position of those determined to keep Turkey at arm's length from the European Union."

Turkey set to refocus on key economic reforms

Secularism comes under siege in Turkey | The Australian

THE recent bombings in Istanbul have cast a pall over the precarious state of Turkey's struggling democracy. While its relationship with neighbour and nemesis Greece has improved marginally, internal tensions have escalated into violence in Istanbul. To understand what has gone wrong, one needs to realise that the Turkish democratic experiment has veered wildly between highs and lows since the secular Turkish state was created in the 1920s by Salonica-born Mustafa Ataturk."

Turkey Showdown Averted, For Now - TIME
Wednesday, Jul. 30, 2008 By PELIN TURGUT / ISTANBUL
Turkey's popularly elected, Islamist-rooted government survived to rule another day, after the country's top court narrowly ruled today against banning the ruling party. In a narrow 6-5 opinion, Constitutional Court judges held that there was insufficient evidence backing the charge that the Justice and Development Party (AKP) was undermining Turkey's secular democracy and seeking to turn the country into an Islamic state. The court did, however, issue a warning on the issue, and it cut public funding for the party by half, leaving Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan facing a monumental challenge to restore political stability in a nation riven by increasingly bitter divisions between secularists and government supporters. Turkey’s Governing Party Avoids Ban - Sebnem Arsu
Turkey’s governing party narrowly missed being banned in a court ruling on Wednesday that released months of pressure in the country and handed a victory to the party’s leader, a former Islamist. The party, Justice and Development, or AKP, as it is know in Turkish, was kept alive by just one vote — six members of Turkey’s Constitutional Court voted to close it, but seven were required. A ban would have brought down the government, forcing national elections for the second time in a year and pitching the country into chaos. “A great uncertainty blocking Turkey’s future has been lifted,” said Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the leader of the party, speaking in Ankara, Turkey’s capital.
And while the ruling was widely viewed as a win for Mr. Erdogan, and in turn for Turkish democracy, the court did not let the party off the hook, voting to cut its public funding in half, a strong but not fatal sanction, and issued a “serious warning,” that the party was steering the country in too Islamic a direction. “AKP is on probation,” said Soli Ozel, a professor at Bilgi University in Istanbul. “The court clearly said it sees the party as a focal institution for Islamizing the country.”

Turkey stepped back from the brink today, having thoroughly frightened itself and its friends. The constitutional court's narrow decision to fine rather than ban Recep Tayyip Erodgan and his ruling AKP is a defeat for attempts to manipulate the legal system for political ends. It represents a score-draw in the long-running, unfinished struggle between secular and religious forces. But most of all, it is a vicarious victory for Turkish democracy."

Who Was Behind the Turkish Blasts? - TIME
Tuesday, Jul. 29, 2008 By PELIN TURGUT / ISTANBUL
Who did it? In smoky cafés and on street stoops, that's what Turks are asking after Sunday's devastating bomb attack on a quiet Istanbul street. The attack's timing has fueled the conjecture, since it occurred on the eve of a politically charged court case to ban the governing party. No one has yet claimed responsibility, so the answer — like so much else in a country divided between secularists and Islamists, nationalists and liberal pro-Europeans — depends very much on who's doing the talking. Two major court cases in Turkey this week hold the keys to the future of democracy and the rule of law in the country

As my plane landed in Istanbul on Sunday, two bombs were exploding on a busy shopping street, killing 17 people and injuring more than 100. It was just as shocking an event as it would have been anywhere. Even this tragedy, though, was able to grab Turks' attention only momentarily. They are deeply fixated on two epic court cases that will shape the future of their country."

Turkey to Rightfully Prohibit Erdogan´s Islamic Terrorism Party
Dr. Muhammad Shamsaddin Megalommatis
July 29, 2008
On March 14, 2008, Abdurrahman Yalcinkaya, the Court of Appeals Chief Prosecutor, demanded Turkey's Highest Court to shutdown the ruling AK (Justice and Development Party - JDP) Party for allegedly undermining secularism, and to ban from politics the president, the prime minister and a great number of ministers and senior party members. The Turkish Constitution explicitly prohibits anti-secular activities, and any effort to promote religious agendas out of the strictly private sphere is castigated and reprimanded. "

British Unleash Ergenekon Network To Destroy Turkey and Its Peace Role
by Dean Andromidas
The nation of Turkey has been rocked by the indictment of a criminal network, the Ergenekon, for planning a military coup against the government, in an investigation that is only comparable to those conducted in Italy into the notorious P-2 Masonic Lodge and the Gladio NATO-linked 'stay behind' networks responsible for Italian terrorism in the 1980s and 1990s. These revelations occur at a time when Turkey is playing a key role in mediating peace talks between Israel and Syria, and taking major initiatives with Iraq and Iran that directly counter British efforts to launch another Southwest Asia war."

Will Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan return to the balcony or has the lightbulb gone out? This is the question that Turkey's constitutional court will decide on in the next few days. Fatal Bombings in an Edgy Turkey

Temperatures in Turkey are rising, but it's not just a matter of the fierce July sun. Perhaps they started just to satisfy the needs of their families and village, the usual reason in a country with limited resources and poor communications"

A Guide to the Turkish Riviera I
Our descriptive guides of the Rivieras began with the illustrious Côte d’Azur in France, with stops like Antibes, Nice and Cannes. The exquisite Italian Riviera was next, with lovely ports of call, from Cinque Terre to Genoa and Portofino to Sanremo.
Well, would you believe it if we told you that the Mediterranean coast of Turkey was the best of the lot? For those who want to escape to a spectacular span of coastline that fascinates with thousands of years of history and culture, the Turkish Riviera is a less hyper and perhaps more attractive alternative. Legend has it that Mark Anthony “gave” the Riviera to Cleopatra as a gift to profess his love. Whatever the case, the region is brilliant for vacation purposes, with wonderful strips of beach and a plethora of sites to balance out the rest and relaxation that awaits. In fact, inhabitants of Turkish Riviera towns love to boast that the area has more Greek and Roman relics, ruins and monuments than Greece and Italy."

Enough already. "
