A RECENT article in the Financial Times somewhat harshly describing “much of north Cyprus” as “remarkably ugly” provided a sharp contrast to official advertisements promoting it as “a corner of earth touched by heaven”. The paper’s comment sparked indignation among those in the tourism industry keen to maintain the image of a gloriously isolated north Cyprus, and vindication among those who have for years warned of environmental decline in a region populated by a people typically Mediterranean in their disregard for things natural."
