ELMSFORD — Melike Ayan jumped to her feet and offered a visitor to her office a cup of Turkish coffee, a brew that, according to ancient tradition, guarantees 40 years of friendship when shared by two people.

Then Ayan offered a splash of lemon cologne, another centuries-old gesture typically offered to visitors to Turkish homes."
