European Leaders Network - EU unfazed by French opposition to Turkey

"EU unfazed by French opposition to Turkey

The EU is said to be unfazed by French opposition to the start of negotiations that could lead to Turkey's entry into the union.

Last minute opposition to negotiations on the science and research chapter is said by one diplomat to have been made for 'domestic consumption' and not of great importance to the EU, according to the New Anatolian.

Threats to impose 'closing benchmarks' come as Turkey launches talks on the 35 chapters following the official start of ascension talks last October. The chapter on public procurement already has had some pre-conditions set to ensure that Turkey has a policy and organisation for procurement in a pre-ascension period."
