Until the parliamentary rejection on March 1, 2003 of the U.S. troop deployment in Turkey, Turkish-U.S. relations were described as a strategic partnership. It was unfortunate that Parliament rejected the proposal, but one must accept that it was done with the free will of the representatives of the people.Relations suffered as a result, but both sides displayed the necessary coolness and averted the matter becoming a crisis. In the past, Turkish-U.S. relations have displayed an improving trajectory, especially after the Korean War. With Turkey's membership in NATO, Turkish and U.S. military officers worked side by side and led the way in pushing the countries closer."
