BRITAIN’S presidency of the EU faced its first big crisis as Jack Straw, the Foreign Secretary, failed to get agreement on a declaration on Turkey’s entry bid, and Ankara threatened to walk away if presented with any more conditions.

Entry talks with Turkey are due to start next month, but there is still deep division between European governments on so many issues that Mr Straw is considering calling an emergency meeting of foreign ministers to stop the process being derailed."
