Turkey EUThe obstacles facing Ankara in its quest to join the European Union were thrown into sharp relief on Monday when a new survey showed that more than half of EU citizens opposed Turkish entry and barely one-third supported it.

The European Commission poll of almost 30,000 people comes as the EU and Turkey struggle to begin membership talks on schedule on October 3. It also follows French and Dutch No votes to ratification of the European constitution – widely seen as a blow to enlargement."
