Rik Torfs, Professor of Common Law and Church-State Relationships, said the German Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger is less likely to be chosen for the papacy; however, if he is chosen, he cannot maintain his opposition to Turkey's European Union (EU) membership.
Professor Torfs, Dean of the School of Law Catholic at the University of Leuven in Belgium, explained the legacy left by Pope John Paul II, and the problems that the new Pope will face and Vatican's attitude towards Turkey's EU membership during an interview with Zaman. "
