Dimitar Bechev has spent much of his career studying Russia and Turkey, so he’s ideally placed to assess how Ankara will approach Moscow’s war against Ukraine.
The Turkish position on Russia “has always been a balancing act,” Bechev told POLITICO’s Andrew Gray from Oxford.
On the one hand, Turkey is a part of NATO and has a close economic and political relationship with the European Union. And Ankara has also cultivated close political and trading ties with Ukraine.
