ISTANBUL — President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s party swept almost half the votes in Sunday's elections, stunning observers inside and outside Turkey. Amid fears of election fraud, a tear-gassed crackdown on media, increased threats of terrorism in the country and a fragile economy with a depreciating Turkish lira, how did Erdogan manage to achieve such a victory?
