Two summers ago, small protests in Istanbul against the demolition of a central green space, Gezi Park, in order to build a shopping mall spread to a national political upsurge that has since shaken the power of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), led by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
