How has Turkey transformed into a Middle Eastern country?
Last year I attended a conference in Washington and asked a former US ambassador who served in Ankara whether the US administration sees Turkey as a European or a Middle Eastern country. His reply was thoughtful: “Turkey is neither European nor Middle Eastern, and interestingly not very Turkish anymore…” Unfortunately, there was a lot of truth in that comment.
