The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is a self-declared state in the eastern Mediterranean that is economically estranged from the rest of the world. Officially recognized only by Turkey, the country came into being in 1983 following a coup d'etat almost a decade earlier that attempted to annex the entire island to Greece. The politics of reunification has dominated the island's affairs in recent years, but in a bid to increase tourism and investment the TRNC has been opening representative offices around the world including one in Bahrain in 2010.
