Turkey forces the U.S. to question how far its commitments to liberalism and democracy really go.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Justice and Development Party, known as the AKP, continue to hold a strong electoral mandate after taking approximately 45 percent of the vote in Turkey's recent municipal elections. The results will push Turkey further toward the AKP’s Islamist orientation in classic populist fashion, and pose yet another challenge to U.S. foreign policy in a tumultuous region.
