Recep Tayyip Erdogan is now the source of Turkey’s problems

Recep Tayyip Erdogan, one of the most innate politicians of his generation, is finding it hard to keep up in the digital era. He has dismissed an audio tape on YouTube, purportedly of a conversation between the prime minister and his son Bilal about hiding millions of euros, as a “cassette” montage fabricated by his enemies. But he is in a hole, and so is Turkey. The power struggle between Mr Erdogan’s neo-Islamist Justice and Development party, or AKP, and his erstwhile allies in the shadowy Islamist movement inspired by Fetullah Gulen, a US-based imam, is convulsing the country.
