On 12 May, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle has said that “the Cyprus problem should be overcome as soon as possible.”

On Sunday, Westerwelle held talks with the Turkish Foreign Minister Agmet Davutoglu. The German Minister said that Germany wants to boost its strategic ties with its fellow NATO member and bring back to life the EU membership negotiations. Westerwelle noted: “we want to overcome the standstill in the membership negotiations. This standstill is not in the interest of Turkey, and it is emphatically not in the interests of Europe either.”
