Turkey Steps Up Presence in Africa

For several years now, Turkey has been an economic and diplomatic rising star in the Middle East and Caucasus, deepening its global leadership credentials by heading up conflict negotiations and closing business deals that are beyond the reach of Western countries, Russia, or China. With further instability and power vacuums being created across the region as a result of the Arab Spring, Ankara has stepped in to fulfill a role of leadership not seen since the Ottoman empire. The next region of focus for Turkish foreign policy? Sub-Saharan Africa – especially those countries featuring a large Islamic population.
