The Turkish Film Festival gets underway

Once Upon a Time in AntatoliaLondon’s annual celebration of Turkish cinema kicks off this Thursday 24 November with a gala screening of new comic drama ‘Being Italian with Signora Enrica’, in which legendary screen siren Claudia Cardinale plays a staunch feminist who gradually warms to her Turkish student lodger. Cardinale will be on hand to introduce the film – but don’t worry if that event is sold out, there’s plenty more good stuff on offer. Our pick of the festival has to be Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s astonishing ‘Once Upon a Time in Anatolia’ (check out a 5-star review by Dave Calhoun), but we’re also rooting for ‘September’, a dark drama about drifting characters lost in modern-day Istanbul. The festival is uniquely structured – all the films play at the Rio in Dalston between Nov 25 and Dec 1, then all of them play again at the Apollo West End from Dec 2 to Dec 8, giving viewers no excuses for missing anything.
