TIMELINES: Today in History

THEN
Nov. 15, 1983, Turks residing in northern part of Island of Cyprus declare independence creating the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC). In 1974, a military coup on the island backed by the ruling junta in Greece prompts Turkey to invade the north to protect the Turkish population. The invasion results in a division of the island between the northern third inhabited by Turkish Cypriots, and the southern two-thirds controlled by Greek Cypriots. Although the north declared independence in 1983, an official resolution has still not been reached between the north and the south and Turkey remains the only country that recognizes the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as an independent state.
