Turkish Canadians call for more quake aid

It was late Sunday night and Davut Temur was stricken with panic.

Earlier in the afternoon, a 7.2-magnitude earthquake had wreaked havoc across eastern Turkey, collapsing nearly 3,000 buildings and leaving more than 450 dead beneath piles of debris.

Temur’s father and sister were in Van, a mostly Kurdish city near the Iranian border and the heart of the earthquake. With phone lines down there, the Toronto man was unable to connect with his family. Scrolling through Internet news reports, he started to cry.

“I thought maybe they all had died,” said the 25-year-old Kurd.
