It came in the wake of the Israeli army’s assault on a flotilla of Turkish-flagged ships, trying to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza, and Turkey’s retaliatory downgrading of diplomatic relations. By standing up to Israel, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s prime minister, became a new hero for the Arab masses."
