Turkey has always been an anomaly among the Muslim countries around the Mediterranean. It was conqueror and occupier, instead of conquered and occupied; secular instead of religious; an empire equal to any other literally straddling the European and Asian continents. In the second half of the twentieth century, it was the one Muslim country that maintained decent relations with Israel. The relationship made some sort of historical sense, because it was the Turks, as the Ottoman Empire rulers of the Palestine, who welcomed and sold land to the first waves of European Jewish refugees to the area. The biggest of those purchases became the foundation of the city of Tel Aviv."
