Samuel Huntington originally formulated his theory, “The Clash of Civilizations,” in a lecture in 1992, and then developed it in an article in “Foreign Affairs” in 1993. In both years, Turkey was a secular semi-demi democracy fighting an increasingly brutal war on terror in its southeast, heading fast for a punishing economic crisis – which erupted in 1994 – but aligned with the West and its institutions, with its EU membership application still in its infancy."
