"HSYK appointments delayed due to disagreements

Despite denials of a crisis by both the government and judiciary officials, the appointment of nearly 1,600 judges and prosecutors has the potential to undermine already-fragile relations between the ruling party and the top judiciary organization.

The Turkish press reported Thursday that the Supreme Board of Judges and Prosecutors, or HSYK, meetings were tense and caused further delay in the appointments, which are already past deadline. The main source of disagreement derives from discord between the government and HSYK over the appointments of judges and prosecutors overseeing the controversial Ergenekon and Sledgehammer cases, both investigating coup attempts against the government."
