When I hear anti-Israeli rhetoric coming out of Ankara, I remember the Turkey I knew — complicated and flawed, but open and moving forward. In the early 1990s, I taught English in an Istanbul high school. The high school was private, meaning there were about 40-45 kids per class, as opposed to the 85-plus one would find in a state school. I took pride in the fact that by late September, I had all the Mehmets, Cenks, Nurs and Orkides straight, and by mid October all of their last names."
