Turkey's application for membership in the European Union is effectively dead.
In public, Turkey and the E.U. both deny that. But the Turkish government's behavior in the last few weeks - sidling up to Iran, Syria and Hamas; helping to set up the Gaza flotilla melee - sealed its fate. In fact, some analysts believe Turkey has adopted a newly pugnacious attitude toward the West precisely because its leaders realize they no longer have a shot at E.U. membership."
