ISTANBUL // Until recently, most Turks felt nothing but admiration for their country’s military, which they viewed as the most respected institution of the republic. The pashas, as top generals are known, appeared to the populace like fathers of the nation, high above the fray of party politics and dedicated only to the good of the country."
