ISTANBUL, March 15 (Reuters) - Turkey's AK Party government plans constitutional changes to reform the judiciary in what many in the secularist elite see as a direct challenge by a political movement with concealed Islamist ambitions.
The government has already cut back the power of another pillar of conservative secularism, the armed forces, as part of reforms demanded by the European Union that Turkey seeks to join. It has also extended its influence in the civil service by appointing supporters; as other ruling parties have done before it."
