Learning each other’s language to promote trust

"Learning each other’s language to promote trust

PROMOTING the teaching of Greek in Turkish Cypriot schools, and Turkish in Greek Cypriot schools is an important part of a Cyprus solution, the EU Commissioner for Multilingualism, Leonard Orban said yesterday.

'From a multilingualist point of view, the fact that more people would be able to learn the language of the other community is extremely important. This is one of the key messages of the multilingual policy. By learning the language of others we are strengthening the intercultural dialogue,” said Orban who is currently on a visit to the island.

'I know it is sensitive here but it is part of the solution. It will improve trust, and help people to live together and interact,” Orban told a news conference in Nicosia."
