On a trip to Turkey, reader Jim Sable finds that knowing a little Turkish can bring pleasant surprises.

Three years ago, my wife and I spent a little over three weeks traveling on our own through western and central Turkey. During that time, we spent a week in Istanbul. While there, it seemed that just about everyone we met had a friend or family member who happened to own a carpet shop and wanted us to visit it. I learned from repeated exposure to this about the informal system known in Turkish as "komisiyon." As you probably suspect, the English word is "commission.""
