A funny thing is happening in Turkey: The country's notoriously assertive generals are watching some of their own be brought before the courts on suspicion of plotting a coup against an elected civilian government - and the brass has not reverted to its old ways. Just a few years ago, this would have been unthinkable. The Turkish military saw itself as the "guardian" of a secular republican order and did not hesitate to depose civilian leaders viewed as insufficiently devoted to the status quo. The generals may yet decide that things have gone too far, but thus far their outward behavior has been that of professionals who accept the ultimate supremacy of civilian rule."
