Reunifying Cyprus: The Best Chance Yet

"Reunifying Cyprus: The Best Chance Yet

Nicosia/Istanbul/Brussels, 23 June 2008: A new peace process in Cyprus offers the best opportunity in decades to solve the intractable division of the island.

Reunifying Cyprus: The Best Chance Yet,* the latest report from the International Crisis Group, analyses the new approach being taken by Greek and Turkish Cypriots in support of a comprehensive settlement to reunify the divided island and outlines how best to further the peace talks. The turnabout is largely due to the surprise election to the Greek Cypriot presidency in February of Demetris Christofias, who has moved quickly to reverse the previous government’s hardline rejection of compromise. He and his Turkish Cypriot counterpart, the pro-settlement Mehmet Ali Talat, are demonstrating the political will for the current UN-mediated talks to succeed, and key players like Turkey are playing a constructive role."
