Turkey's ruling AKP decided on Monday to launch a wider democratization package rather than amending the Constitution to avoid a closure ruling from the Constitutional Court and to hold talks with the opposition parties. Analysts say the AKP's decision to let the case run its natural course is a positive development but remains cautious as uncertainties hang over whether the opposition supports the package or what the AKP would do if compromise fails. Turkish PM Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday his government would speed up political reforms required to join the EU after stalling for months amid opposition from nationalist parties."
