The European Parliament approved the European Union’s Lisbon Treaty on Wednesday, with 525 votes in favour, 115 against and 29 abstentions. It is expected to come into effect next year, after all 27 member states of the EU have individually ratified the treaty. Replacing the rejected constitution of 2005, the Lisbon Treaty has so far been ratified by France and four other member states."
