Nearly every German has memories of Christstollen, gingerbread and tea on cold December Sundays during the lighting of advent candles. The bread is such a popular German Christmas treat that members of the German community in Istanbul made a special request about 10 years ago of the Burç and Lebon pastry. They wanted the bakery on Istiklal to make it for them. Since then the shop began churning out loaves of the sweet dense fruit bread sprinkled with powdered sugar at the beginning of each December."
