"Mending Turkish-American relations Saturday, November 24, 2007

One consequence of the Iraqi war was the damage it did to Turkish-American relations after 2003, sometimes to the point of creating serious crises. So much so that the majority of the Turkish public now perceives the U.S. as Turkey's adversary. There's no doubt that both governments share the responsibility for bringing the relations to this point. The U.S. chose to ignore the fact that the developments in Iraq had assumed detrimental effects to Turkey following the 3/1 motion. On the other hand, the Turkish government did not only remain indifferent to the development of an emotional as well as dangerous anti-Americanism, it sometimes stimulated this feeling under the influence of populism. Turkey and America have failed to establish a dialogue based on mutual trust. The draft decision on the Armenian genocide' allegations that kept coming up every year in the American Congress also served to feed this tension. "
