Q. What is the PKK?
A. The PKK is a Kurdish guerrilla group based in northern Iraq that has been staging cross-border attacks in its fight for autonomy for the Kurdish ethnic minority in southeastern Turkey since 1984. It shifted more people and equipment into bases in Iraq in the 1990s as it came under more military pressure in Turkey. The PKK is labeled a terrorist group by the United States and the European Union. PKK is a Kurdish acronym; its full name in English is the Kurdistan Workers' Party."
