Samuel Huntington, author of “The Clash of Civilizations,” called Turkey a “torn” country. Recent surveys on how Turks feel about the West and the East prove him right. The German Marshall Fund’s “Transatlantic Trends 2007” study once again proves that Turks feel equally estranged from both the West and the East. Turkish people’s feelings have cooled not only toward the United States and the European Union, but also towards Iran and Russia, revealing a growing isolation from the East and the West. Turkey straddles the geographical and cultural borders between Europe and Asia, without really belonging to either."
