"Highway manager: The bridges would stay put even if Istanbul was razed to the ground

Following the collapse of a Minnesota bridge, some are wondering about the Boğaziçi and Fatih Sultan Mehmet bridges in Istanbul.

'The bridges would stay put even if Istanbul was razed to the ground,' said Asım Öztürk, a deputy regional manager with the Highway Authority, at a press conference yesterday. 'The 33 year-old Bosphorus Bridge, over which 180 thousand vehicles pass each day, and the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge, over which approximately 230 thousand vehicles pass, most of which are heavy vehicles, are both strong enough to survive an earthquake.'"
