A US Congressman has called for progress on a UN-brokered agreement, between the Greek Cypriot and the Turkish Cypriot sides, with a view to make headway towards substantive negotiations for a political settlement.

Democrat Robert Wexler, from Florida, has also pointed out in a letter to the US Secretary of State that ending the division of Cyprus will enhance Turkey’s European Union prospects and at the same time strengthen its relations with Greece.

“Troop deployment on Cyprus seems to be disproportional – given the low threat level facing Turkish-Cypriots”, Wexler said, adding that ''thirteen million crossings of the Green Line have occurred without incident''."
