Why are we asking this now?
Turkey has just held a general election, widely hailed as the most important in the post-war period. The election was called by the Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, four-and-a-half months early after he had failed to get his party's candidate approved for the role of the president of the country. In the event, the ruling AK party was returned with a greatly increased majority of just short of 47 per cent of the vote, although it still lacks the overall two-thirds majority in the seats required to get its presidential candidate approved automatically."
