EU puts off monetary union talks with Turkey

"EU puts off monetary union talks with Turkey

Brussels - The European Union and Turkey will not open membership negotiations on monetary and economic policy as scheduled on June 26, focusing instead on less controversial questions linked to statistics and financial contro, EU diplomats said Monday.

'The monetary chapter was not considered ripe for discussion at the moment,' an EU diplomat told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Discussions on Tuesday will, however, focus on bringing Turkish legislation on statistics and financial control in line with EU rules.

In addition, EU-Turkey discussions could also start shortly on company law and financial services, said the EU diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity."
