Turkey is a bigger export market for U.S. products than Russia, said a top American trade official here yesterday. According to the Deputy Commerce Secretary David Sampson, the economic reforms underway, openness of the market and the degree of transparency makes Turkey a bigger export market than Russia. There have been dramatic reforms that Turkey not only pursued but implemented in the course of the last 5 6 years, said the American official in an interview with the Turkish Daily News. Conducting an official visit to Turkey, Sampson was in Istanbul Thursday following talks that he held in Ankara on Wednesday.Despite Turkey's economic recovery, American firms have not shown the same level of interest when compared with European and Arab capitals. Sampson agreed that the trade volume between the two countries does not reflect the potential. Success breeds success. And there are some success stories to build on, said Sampson, pointing to the fact that trade has increased by 17 percent to $11 billion.Emphasizing the fact that economic and commercial ties are undevelopeld compared to the diplomatic/military ties, Sampson said that his visit aims at sending a strong signal to strengthen the third leg in the relations."
