Turkey's Islamic-rooted ruling party and secular opposition bickered Thursday over when to hold early general elections, even though both sides have called for the poll as a way out of a showdown sparked by a dispute over political Islam.

Turkey's electoral board, which oversees elections, recommended July 22, the date that was approved by a parliamentary committee late Wednesday. But the main opposition party on Thursday objected, saying the elections would be held at a period when many Turks would be away from their homes on vacation and unable to vote.
