"FT interview: Abdullah Gul

Vincent Boland, the FT’s Turkey correspondent, interviewed Abdullah Gul, the Turkish foreign minister and his party’s candidate for president, at the foreign minister’s office on May 4 2007

As the man at the centre of the storm, how do you assess what has happened in the past few days?

A. Well, first of all, what has happened has happened, all right? That is my position. Now, we don’t want to talk about that, we want to talk about the future, yes? Turkey faced some difficulties, of course, but I’m sure we are able to overcome all these problems and talk about the future through democracy and the rule of law. This is our [the government’s] position and my position."
