"The Turkish-Italian connection

“My god, I am the only ambassador who does not speak Turkish,” complained Belgian Ambassador Marc van Rysselberghe. We were at the reception hall of the Italian Embassy listening to Ambassador Carlo Marsili’s speech in Turkish. Married to a Turkish woman, Ambassador Marsili is “emotionally connected” to the Turkish people. During his recent visit to Today’s Zaman’s office I saw Mr. Marsili wearing cufflinks with motifs of the Ottoman tuğra (the Sultan’s signature). On Thursday evening I realized that the motifs were not only on the external garment but in the deepest parts of his heart."
