"Zeus’ Sacred Place

26.01.2007

In ancient times Izmir’s Birgi province was Dioshieron (Zeus’ Sacred Place), in the Middle Ages it was Christopolis (the city of Christ) and during the Ottoman era the area was an important religious and scientific centre. Today an initiative is underway to include the Aegean site on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, the Anatolia News Agency reports. A number of projects have already been carried out jointly by Birgi Municipality, the Foundation for the Promotion and Protection of the Environment and Cultural Heritage (CEKUL) and Mimar Sinan University to make Birgi, where the Lydians settled in 2,000 BC, a world city."
