The YTL 222 million in revenue that the Jockey Club of Turkey (TJK) reined in last year seems to indicate that Ataturk's saying “Horseracing is a social need for modern societies” has not fallen on deaf ears. In the third floor VIP lounge of the TJK's Veliefendi racecourse in Istanbul, a plush light blue carpet sets a regal tone for the leather furniture and sitting areas. A flat screen television is propped on a wall in the center. In the background one can enjoy the best view of the race while sipping on cocktails."
