CYPRUS: EU TO ESTABLISH TRADE LINKS WITH TURKISH NORTHERN CYPRUS

"CYPRUS: EU TO ESTABLISH TRADE LINKS WITH TURKISH NORTHERN CYPRUS

Brussels, 22 Jan. (AKI) - European Union foreign ministers agreed Monday to launch direct trade links with Turkish controlled Northern Cyprus. The decision taken in Brussels fulfills a pledge made by the EU to Turkish Cypriots in April 2004 that economic ties would be established if they voted in favour of a United Nations plan to re-unite the island. Monday's decision won the approval of the Greek Cypriot government in Nicosia, which since joining the EU in May 2004 had stalled attempts to open up trade to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, an entity recongnised only by Turkey."
