A critical test for Turkey at George A. Papandreou ’s blog

"A critical test for Turkey

Ogun Samast has been arrested in northern Turkey, just one day after the assassination of Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink. The cold-blooded murder of a courageous defender of free speech and democracy has shocked the world. It is doubly disturbing that Samast, who has confessed to the murder, is only 16 or 17 – almost the same age as my daughter. Worse still, it is not exceptional that someone so young should be driven by hatred and fanaticism to commit murder. Terrorist groups worldwide are recruiting impressionable teenagers as suicide bombers, and children are enlisted by militia to carry out ethnic cleansing."
